from igourmet
- imported from Holland

- ground coffee
- add a touch of Bailey's Irish Crème
- Varieties sold separately
The history of Douwe Egberts starts in 1753 when a husband and wife opened The White Ox, a gourmet shop in the North of Holland. Their offerings focused on coffee, tea and tobacco, products that were imported from the Far East and traded in Amsterdam. Sales grew rapidly and soon Douwe Egberts started a wholesaling and distribution business. They built their first coffee roasting plant in 1919 and began exporting their premium quality coffee in 1930. By 1960, Douwe Egberts accounted for more than half of Dutch coffee exports. Available in three varieties - Dark Roast, Medium Roast, and Decaffeinated - we have found no other coffee that can match the heady power and richness of these blends.

Beemster X.O. - Extra DOUBLE Aged Gouda (1 Pound) by igourmet.com
from igourmet
- imported from Holland
- cow's milk
- aged 36 months
- intense, butterscotch, nutty flavor
- hard and grateable, yet creamy on the palate
A cheese that requires three adjectives to describe it had better be something special. Well, we nearly died of delight when we first sampled this remarkable cheese. In our minds, the chance that any cheese could be even more flavorful than our 18-month Aged Gouda was remote. But this one pulled it off! The first thing we noticed about our new 36-month Gouda was that its texture was crumbly, like that of Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano. Then we tasted it, and WOW! was it packed with flavor. Butterscotch immediately came to mind, followed by alternating waves of whiskey and pecan. All this from a product with three basic ingredients: milk, salt and, most importantly, time.
Magnasco Edam (1 Pound) by igourmet.com
from igourmet
- A grating cheese with a distinctive taste
- Grate over pasta, rice, soup or steamed vegetables
- Shave thinly over salads or enchiladas
- Made from pasteurized milk
- Imported from Argentina
A tradition of excellence which dates back to the European immigrants has developed into a burgeoning cheese industry for Argentina. Finally earning the international recognition they deserve, these cheeses are more than the mere replicas that their names suggest. Magnasco Edam balls are especially popular in the USA among our Puerto Rican population. This Edam is an obvious copy of the Dutch original - complete with red wax and cellophane overwrap. It is a touch sharper and a lot harder than the cheese that inspired it. Made from pasteurized whole cow's milk, Magnasco Edam is hard enough to grate and makes a wonderful topping for any rice, vegetarian or pasta dish.
Goat Gouda (8 ounces) by igourmet.com
from igourmet
- imported from Holland
- goat's milk
- table cheese and melter
Over twenty years ago, we had a request from the man who originated "The Cellar" at Macy's. "I want the Dutch Goat cheese I tasted when I was in Holland," he said. We took a trip to Amsterdam and inquired on his behalf to all of our suppliers and any cheese producers we could find. We had no success. There was not an ounce of Dutch Goat cheese anywhere! Two decades since that adventure Dutch goat cheese is still a rarity, except, that is, for Goat Gouda. Henri Willig discovered that Gouda, the cheese people most commonly associate with Holland, can be made from goat's milk. The cheese has proven wildly popular in Europe and is starting to turn heads here in the States too. Henri Willig's glorious Goat Gouda has since been copied by other Dutch cheese producers, but in our opinion his is still the best Goat Gouda around. If you like goat cheese, we strongly suggest you try this tangy, satiny, mouth-watering gem. Made from pasteurized goat's milk.
Dorothea (8 ounces) by igourmet.com
from igourmet
- A rare goat cheese from Holland
- Made with basil oil and potato skins
- A true delicacy
- Enjoy cubed as a snack or sliced on a sandwich
- Imported from Holland
On a recent trip to Holland, we discovered a limited production Dutch chevre created in 1993 by the Van Dijk family. Dorothea, named after the Van Dijk's daughter, was created at the request of the famous chef Cas Spijkars. Cas wanted to win the annual Dutch award for "Most Unusual Food" and thought that a flavored goat cheese might do the trick. They began experimenting with a secret ingredient - potato skins - chosen because the potato is an important food in Dutch culinary tradition. But Cas thought that initial efforts with the cheese/potato combination fell a little flat, so they kept working. Finaly, after tweaking the recipe by adding some basil oil, coriander oil and chopped onion, Cas and the Van Dijks had completed their masterpiece - and subsequently won the award! Each wheel of Dorothea (only 4,000 are made per year) is pampered with the optimum aging conditions. Humidity and temperature are meticulously adjusted every few days to assure proper maturation. This wonderfully delicious cheese is made from pasteurized milk but retains all of the taste for which goat's milk is famous. It is aged over 60 days to develop a full, nutty flavor and a body that is firm, but not hard enough to grate. Dorothea has an aroma reminiscent of the fresh outdoors and an unforgettable flavor. Made from pasteurized goat's milk, aged over 60 days.
